This is the instructions for interfacing the morse code input and output.
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. If you don't know what you are doing - DON'T DO IT.
To connect a paddle to the joystick port all you need is a female DB-9
and then you wire your paddle directly to the plug:
Pin
2 DOT
4 DASH
8 GND
If you also want to use the morse code output from the joystick port (with
or without the PTT) then you need a small interface to connect the joystick
outputs to your rig. The specific requirements of the interface depend upon
your rig. Some rigs use a positive keying voltage while others use a
negative voltage. Some use quite high voltages (e.g. -75V) on the keying
input and so you not only must ensure that you get the right transistor for
the job but that it can also handle the voltage on the keying line.
For the IC-735 which uses a low positive voltage, a simple 2N2222 NPN
transistor is sufficient for both keying and PTT.
The circuit for them is:
Code output.
____ KEY input to rig
C/
Joystick |/
Pin 9 ----/\/\/\/\-----|
10K |\
E\____ GND
2N2222
==================================================================
PTT
____ PTT from rig
C/
Joystick |/
Pin 5 ----/\/\/\/\-----|
10K |\
E\____ GND
2N2222
==================================================================
Even if you use the morse code output you do not have to use the PTT. You
can use the VOX on your rig to key the rig if you wish. This is useful if
you have semi- or fast- breakin. If you do not use the PTT it is best to
put the command "x 0" in your defaults file so that PTT won't be generated.

The above diagrams will NOT work with a PNP transistor and negative keying.
I have not figured out a circuit that will connect the joystick output to
a negatively keyed rig.
